Trevor Borg
Trevor Borg is an artist from Malta and through his practice he explores aspects of place. He obtained a practice-based PhD in Fine Art from the University of Leeds and he is a lecturer at the University of Malta and a practicing artist. In his practice he often juxtaposes the poetic with the political to make open ended statements which are not limited to specific issues but rather wide ranging. Certain places, more than others, appear condensed with myriad stories which can be unraveled, juxtaposed, manipulated and re-told. I am interested in exploring the ‘what is’ and ‘what might be’, the artist states. His work borrows from various disciplines and forms non-linear narratives that are continually being altered.
The land becomes a site for artistic practice; it provides the matter and it is a main source for practice. The work constitutes investigation, reading, mapping and collecting. It spans across various media including painting, drawing, sculpture, installations, photography and film. Borg’s work is place oriented; it reveals place. He investigates territory and aspects of temporality; new histories are made and realities imagined in the process of art practice. Found matter is often incorporated into the work. (Re-) deterritorialisation reconfigures matter; it locates it in different contexts whereby new relations could be established. Borg’s work explores the potential of matter and how it contributes to an understanding of place.
